To preserve and share American Indian culture and community values through public performances and athletics while fundraising to help serve the dialysis-related Tribal Community healthcare needs of the Spirit Lake people.
To learn more about the Spirit Lake Sioux people and why the Non-Profit Foundation was created... Please take a few moments to watch the following informational video documentary. Filmed locally on the tribal lands of the Spirit Lake Sioux, you will experience an up close and personal look into the lives of those directly effected by the ongoing diabetes epidemic within the community and the daily struggle that most tribal members face as a direct result of the disease. -click the video link below...
Spirit Lake adults ages 18+ were 97% more likely and Spirit Lake elders ages 55+ were 198% more likely to experience diabetes than their U.S. general population counterparts. These results indicated diabetes is being contracted at earlier ages and health promotion is crucial to impacting the diabetes epidemic for future generations. The high diabetes prevalence rates are indicators of the need for chronic disease management education for those already experiencing the disease. For others who have kidney damage resulting from diabetes, dialysis is usually a 3 days per week, 3-4 hour procedure that is compounded by a 200 mile round trip and high poverty rates for Spirit Lake dialysis patients. A local dialysis unit would decrease the hardships experienced by the current 11 dialysis patients, and projected 15 patients in 2015 (36% increase), that may prove to be cost and time effective alternative for those suffering from end stage renal disease.
Dear Friends, I urge you to join me today in supporting this worthy cause for a common good. Together, we can help see that the people of the Spirit Lake Tribal community no longer suffer the hardships associated with their current dialysis management. With your help, The Spirit Lake Foundation will help fulfill the great need for a dialysis facility located on the Spirit Lake Dakotah Sioux reservation. As mentioned in the Spirit Lake Foundation's informational documentary video, all tribal members currently receiving dialysis treatment must travel great distances, in most cases hundreds of miles a day up to three times a week, and often at their own expense. Many tribal members are simply unable to pay for the many out of pocket expenses associated with "off reservation" treatment. Sadly, many give up and go without the treatment that they so desperately depend upon. To make your donation today you can click on the PayPal "Donate" button below. If you are unable to donate via the web or feel uncomfortable doing so, please send a check or money order, made out to the "Spirit Lake Foundation" and mail it to the address listed below. Together we can save lives. Yours in community spirit, Kenny Merrick Jr.President and Founder Spirit Lake Foundation |
